Generational Diversity

We have 4 generations in the workplace today. Pre-Baby Boomer, Baby Boomer, Generation X and Generation Y. Depending on the generation you where born into determines your views and opinions of how you see the world. Some examples of what one's generation impacts would include; our approach to work, our view of authority, how technologically savvy one is and the expectations of others. Keep in mind, some traits are associated with age as well as generation. A key point to keep in mind, generation is one dimension of diversity. Other major dimensions of diversity, for example, would be race, where one grew up, religion and age. Subsequently, it is unfair to say "all" or "always" when speaking about generational diversity. Not all baby boomers where hippies, for example. Rather, there are some generalities in each generation to be aware of. The pre baby boomers are more likely to live to work, whereas the generation X'ers are more likely to work to live...think about that one!

Another factor is that each generation is influenced by other generations. One hundred years ago, and it was rare a child would grow up, go to college and leave the area they were born into. Today, it has become more common for a child to leave to go to college and perhaps go to another country to work. Subsequently, the Generation Y person is influenced differently today than the Pre -Baby Boomer did when they were growing up.

Most importantly is the awareness that different generations exist. Selling real estate to four different generations, regardless of what generation you as a REALTOR fit into, can be as rewarding as it can be challenging. Too often we try to get the other generation to see the issue (how they buy or list a home) as we do instead of valuing the way they see the issue and asking ourself what's required to have a good relationship. The foundation to building and having a good relationship is increased communication between parties. Valuing and respecting similarities and differences builds many bridges that can lead to successful and rewarding relationships. Not to mention we all have a lot to learn from each other, regardless of generation or age.
